I have the honour to submit for the in-

formation of His Excellency the Governor the results of a care-

ful inspection of the nullens and their neighbourhoods in the

Western part of the City, with a view to ascertaining their

present condition with reference to the larvae of Anopheles. I

made this inspection on the afternoon of the 28th. and 29tb.

ultimo, and the 1st. instant.

The nullans are throughout in a better

condition than formerly. They are being kept clear of brushwood;

the streams are confined for the most part to definite channels;

and larvae are much less abundent than formerly, though they

were present to some extent. The matters which I have to call

in question are chiefly dependent on the inadequacy of the

measures at present in use, and emphasize the urgency of the

necessity for the training of the nullahs in at least the more

central district; and in the more outlying localities when it

may be practicaole.

Dr. J. M. Atkinson,

I shall take the nullahs in their order

from East to West, beginning with that above Ripon Terrace; and

my

Principal Civil Medical Officer.
